Thomas Deacon Academy, Foster + Partners

Learn how two practices of very different sizes are using the interaction of people and technology to improve their respective design processes.

The Specialist Modeling Group (SMG) acts as an in-house R&D consultancy within Foster + Partners. As the practice continues to strive for the highest quality, performance driven design, in a context that demands better/cheaper/faster delivery, the SMG aims to develop flexible design workflows which harness this complexity, by connecting geometric form finding and rationalization with performance simulation and analysis, and by providing user interfaces which promote rapid evaluation and decision making.

When Markland Klaschka was incorporated in 2001 they had no legacy software, staff or standards. At the time they decided to see whether BIM worked... for them at least. Robert will discuss the links they see between large and small practice workflows and approach that modern software has created. He will also explain how it has affected their approach to staffing and how they think the demographic of a practice will change to a smaller more knowledge based team supported by strong technology. He will also show some examples of current work.

Francis Aish
Design Systems Development Manager
Specialist Modeling Group
Foster + Partners

Francis joined Foster + Partners' Specialist Modeling Group in 1999, where his role is the research and development of systems to model and solve complex, multi-disciplinary design problems. This role takes two forms. Firstly, he conducts project driven R&D, for which he has worked on over 100 projects and competitions, including the SwissRe HQ in London and the new Airport for the Beijing Olympics. Secondly he conducts collaborative research with leading universities and companies.
He was Foster + Partners' Principal Researcher for the European Commission ARTHUR research project.

Prior to joining Foster + Partners, he spent two years in the Advanced Technology division of Nortel Networks, investigating the application of virtual reality to the design, management and marketing of telecommunications networks.

Francis received his undergraduate degree in Aerospace Systems Engineering from the University of Southampton in 1996, and is currently undertaking an Engineering Doctorate at University College London. He has published a number of papers on design and simulation systems, and lectured on the same subject in Europe and North America.

Robert Klaschka
Founding Director
Markland Klaschka

Robert is focused on developing integrated design solutions from start to finish using the practice's implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM). His work in this field inevitably extends outside the bounds of the practice and has led to collaborations with all the consultant disciplines and several large main contractors.

Robert also leads the development of the practice's IT strategy and its direct application to efficient innovative construction, design exploration and sustainability. He is currently writing the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Good Practice Guide to Computers for Architects which will be published later this year. He works closely with architectural software providers to influence future development and is an invited member of Bentley Systems architectural user council and the NBS (National Building Specification) advisory panel. He has also lectured on the application of the BIM in the construction industry in the UK and the US.

He is also actively involved in the advancement of sustainable construction and has advised the Building Centre Trust. His approach makes a comparative analysis of both traditional and new technologies and their effect on energy consumption to decide on the most appropriate solutions in each case.

The Los Angeles Design Technology Forum

The Los Angeles Design Technology Forum serves to increase awareness of technological innovations in design and construction, and to foster their application throughout the Los Angeles design community. By connecting a diverse audience of designers, engineers, builders and owners who have widely varying conceptions of technology in their work, we hope to create new opportunities for efficiency and creativity.

The Los Angeles Design Technology Forum is coordinated by Marty Doscher (IT Director, m0rphosis Architects) and Reg Prentice (Gensler).

Marty Doscher holds a Bachelor of Science degree with major in Architecture from Georgia Tech, and a Master of Architecture degree from SCI-Arc. Marty Doscher is IT Director for m0rphosis architects in Los Angeles. His primary focus is the integration of the virtual building model into design and construction processes. He has over 20 years experience with CAD, and has been in an IT/CAD management role for 8 years.

Reg Prentice holds Bachelor of Building Science and Bachelor of Architecture degrees from the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He works in technology leadership at Gensler in Los Angeles. Previously Reg was the Director of Information Management for Gehry Partners in Los Angeles, where he worked in various technology management roles for over 11 years. Reg is focused on the integration of technology and design.
