The Digital Design Ecosystem — Towards a Pre-Rational Architecture

The traditional design process has entailed the development of design morphologies based on metaphoric or utilitarian references. Performative testing is then typically applied post-factum, or post-rationally, to these forms as a way of validating their ability to withstand a variety of environmental conditions.

The Digital Design Ecosystem seeks to invert this process, injecting a pre-rational approach to the development of design morphology, such that a variety of performative challenges can be applied to form as a feedback mechanism - simultaneously - to any given set of site, programmatic, or design conditions. This approach doesn’t ignore other influences on design but can provide a greater range of options currently missing from traditional practice as well as teaching. The architect as interpreter – versus implementer - might then confer a new type of professional significance.

Paul Seletsky
Senior Manager of Digital Design, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, New York

Paul Seletsky, Associate AIA, is the Senior Manager of Digital Design for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP in New York. He presides over research and development efforts, implementing building information modeling and other new strategic processes in design. His professional work and writings have helped engender discussion and awareness of Digital Design and its potential impact on the future of architectural practice. In 2003, he began organizing a monthly technology committee lecture series at the AIA in New York highlighting technology and practice, and has also served on several national AIA technology committees. A 1982 graduate of Cooper Union’s Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture in New York, Mr. Seletsky has managed Digital Design in both the public and private sectors, served on numerous design juries, and lectured at numerous academic and professional venues.

The Los Angeles Design Technology Forum

The Los Angeles Design Technology Forum is a collective organization representing a wide cross-section of architecture and engineering firms and academic institutions around the Los Angeles basin. It serves to increase awareness of technological innovations in design and construction, and to foster their application throughout the Los Angeles design community. By connecting a diverse audience of designers, engineers, builders and owners who have widely varying conceptions of technology in their work, we hope to create new opportunities for efficiency and creativity.

The Los Angeles Design Technology Forum is coordinated by Marty Doscher and Reg Prentice. It is supported by ABC Imaging, a nation-wide reprographics company. Special thanks to Dr. David Jason Gerber (faculty liaison) and SCI-Arc.
